For college students, summertime offers a much-needed break from studying and writing term papers. While some students take time off, others jumpstart their future careers with summer internships. These internships offer real-life experience in the workforce, networking possibilities, and the opportunity to develop skillsets.

The McKesson Summer Internship Program is a 10-week opportunity where students dive into McKesson’s values, prepare for full-time roles, and work on real-world projects. This year, we welcomed 80 interns to explore a wide-ranging set of careers in the healthcare industry that span numerous business functions, from supply and product management to sales and software engineering.

“Our program is designed to find talent that has a passion for the healthcare industry, because with every role and project, there is a healthcare provider, a pharmacy, or a patient at the end,” explains Tori Whitfield, talent programs recruiter at McKesson. “Once an intern is accepted into the program, they are expected to function as an asset to our team. We expect each student to take initiative, foster good communication and collaboration skills, and be ready to amplify their voice for innovative ideas.”

Activities Focused on Professional Growth

Our Talent Programs team coordinates engagement events to provide interns with a unified enterprise experience. These events include summer orientation, core strengths training, and a “Branding and Showcasing Your Personal Brand” workshop. Students can also participate in activities with our Employee Resource Groups and give back to local communities through service projects and volunteer opportunities.

Our core strengths and “Branding You” events are focused on helping interns develop professionally, enabling them to excel not only during their internships at McKesson, but to set them up for success in their future career.

The core strengths session gives interns an opportunity to reflect not only on how they are showing up at the workplace each day, but also helps them identify areas for improvement. During the “Branding You” session, interns learn how to market themselves during an interview better, build and showcase their personal brand, and leverage AI in a professional setting.

Kayla Grimes

“What’s been great about McKesson is that I developed mentorship relationships with people in and out of my business unit during the 2024 internship session. There was no shortage of people at McKesson who were vested in my learning and growth,” says Kayla Grimes, a 2024 summer intern for U.S. Pharmaceutical. “They took a deep interest in my personal interests and work to incorporate them into my learning experience.”

Many of our businesses also host meetups for new interns that allow the team to network, gain unique experiences within our company, and participate in team-building exercises. For example, interns in our U.S. Pharmaceutical business can tour a vaccine freezer at one of our distribution centers, where temperatures are kept at -5 to -10 degrees Fahrenheit to maintain the safety and efficacy of frozen vaccines. Real-life experience in our businesses takes priority to help ensure interns learn as much as possible during their short time with us.

“I shadowed so many people from the Providers Solutions side to understand all aspects of the business,” Grimes says. “From seeing how practices purchase medications to learning about the day-to-day issues that McKesson helps resolve, it’s been a transformative experience.”
